In a little forest cottage lived a brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel. One day they wandered through the woods picking berries, and without noticing they went far from home.
Between the trees they spotted a wonderful house: walls of gingerbread, a roof of candy, and windows of clear sugar! Gently the children tasted a crumb — so sweet!
Out of the house came an old witch. But Hansel and Gretel were clever and polite. They quickly saw that the sly old woman meant to muddle them, and they decided to outsmart her.
"Granny, please show us the very biggest sweet in your pantry!" asked Gretel. While the witch went searching, the children quietly took a basket of gingerbread and tiptoed out the door.
On the way home they saw a little white bird fluttering merrily among the trees. "Follow me!" it seemed to sing, and it led them straight to their own garden gate.
Mother and Father hugged them tight and set warm milk on the table. Hansel and Gretel told all about the sweet little house and laughed and laughed.
Then they climbed under their blankets, closed their eyes, and fell fast asleep, happy and safe. Goodnight.
