At the edge of the forest stood a tall little tower, and in it lived a girl named Rapunzel with a braid longer than a winter evening. Every morning she sang out of her window, and the squirrels and tits stopped to listen.
One day a kind traveller paused below the tower, spellbound. "What a beautiful voice!" he said. Rapunzel was glad of a visitor and let down her long braid like a golden ladder.
They became friends. The traveller brought her an apple one day, a picture book the next, and Rapunzel told him about the clouds she watched from up high.
Once she said, "I want to walk on the grass too." Her friend wove a strong ladder from branches, and Rapunzel climbed down to the ground for the very first time. She laughed, touched the flowers, and listened to the brook.
Together they planted a little garden by the tower, and hung a lantern in the window so every traveller would have light.
That evening Rapunzel braided her hair, lay down by the open window, and listened to the forest rustle. Her eyes closed all on their own. Goodnight.
